U.N. Basic Meeting rejects Russia’s annexation claims in Ukraine

The U.N. Basic Meeting this week overwhelmingly backed a decision calling on nations to not acknowledge Russia’s claims of sovereignty over 4 areas of Ukraine and demanding that Moscow finish its tried unlawful annexation.

Solely 4 nations sided with Russia in opposition to the decision — Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Nicaragua. The decision says the areas of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia are “quickly occupied by Russia on account of aggression” and are in violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and political independence.

Together with longstanding Russian allies like China and Cuba, India was amongst 35 U.N. member nations that voted to abstain from the measure.

The Basic Meeting took up the decision for debate after Russia’s use of its veto powers within the Safety Council over its tried annexation of Ukrainian territories.

Csaba Korosi, a Hungarian diplomat now serving as president of the Basic Meeting, stated the overwhelming vote makes it clear that Russia’s annexation of occupied Ukrainian territories is against the law. The Kremlin has launched dozens of missile and drone strikes at civilian targets this week in its conflict on Ukraine.

“When it turns into a every day routine to observe photographs of destroyed cities and scattered our bodies, we lose our humanity,” Mr. Korosi stated after the vote. “We should discover a political answer based mostly on the U.N. Constitution and worldwide regulation.”

The permitted decision calls on all nations and worldwide organizations to not acknowledge Russia’s annexation claims and calls for the quick reversal of its annexation declaration.
